What is Viagra?

Viagra is a relatively new prescription drug developed by Pfizer, Inc. for treating male impotency (Erectile Dysfunction).
Its pharmacological name is Sildenafil Citrate. Approved by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 1998, it is now the major treatment for male impotence.

What does Viagra do?

Viagra increases the body's ability to achieve and maintain an erection during sexual stimulation. Sexual stimulus is still required for erection to occur. Viagra doesn't produce spontaneous erections and doesn't protect you from sexually transmitted diseases.

How does Viagra work?

Viagra is taken orally in the form of a tablet about one hour before sexual activity. It is absorbed into the bloodstream where it functions as an inhibitor to an enzyme, phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5), found primarily in the penis. This enzyme breaks down cyclic GMP. Cyclic GMP is produced during sexual stimulation, leading to penis erection. The longer the cyclic GMP exists, the greater the chance for increased blood flow to the penis, thereby generating an erection.

For how long is Viagra effective after being taken?

The half-life is approximately 4 hours. It is recommended that sexual stimulation commence from 30 to 60 minutes after Viagra is taken.

What happens if there isn't any sexual stimulation?

Sildenafil, or Viagra, is excreted as metabolites from the body in bowel movements and urine.

How successful is Viagra?

The general success rate of Viagra is about 75 - 80% for males with Erectile Dysfunction.

Does Viagra have any side effects?

Some side effects experienced by a small percentage of the study group included headaches, upset stomach, facial flushing, diarrhoea, urinary tract infection and visual changes to color sensitivity

Who shouldn't take Viagra?

The main contraindication to prescribing Viagra are those who suffer from the rare disease, retinitis pigmentosa, or people using nitroglycerin or nitrous oxide medications. It is not suitable for children or women.

Recently, it has been reported that 16 Viagra patients have died. While there is no direct evidence that Viagra caused the deaths, it pays to be aware that sexual activity increases cardiac risk. Be aware that Male impotence can often be a side effect of more serious cardiovascular problems.

Viagra MUST NOT be taken by men who are on medications containing nitrates, such as nitroglycerine tablets, as this could lead to dangerous lowering of blood pressure. Evidence suggests that Viagra may interact with other medications in such a way as to increase health risk. It may also react with so called "Designer or Recreational Drugs". Men who have medical conditions, such as sickle cell anemia, leukemia, or multiple myeloma, or those with abnormally-shaped penis should also not take Viagra because of a possibility of producing a prolonged erection.

Is Viagra available over the counter?

Only use Viagra if it has been prescribed by a qualified physician. You must tell your doctor exactly what other medications you are taking. FDA regulations only allow Viagra to be purchased with a physician's prescription.

If you buy Viagra from an unlicenced pharmacy that offers Viagra without a prescription you may be conned. The pills may not be genuine viagra and your credit card details may be stolen.

How often can I take Viagra?

For those patients who have been prescribed Viagra by their doctors, Viagra should only be taken once per day, about 1 hour before sexual activity.

What Viagra Dosage is best?

Many doctors are now recommending that Viagra treatment begins with the minimum 25mg dose. The standard dose is 50mg. Dosages higher than 100mg per day are NOT recommended.

Can Viagra be combined with other treatments for Erectile Dysfunction?

Using Viagra in combination with other treatments is NOT recommended, since no studies have been done to assess its safety and effectiveness in these conditions.

Are there any concerns about long term Viagra use?

It has only been available for a relatively short time and some health practitioners are concerned since little is known about Viagra's long term effects.
